Beneath the canopy
An Achievable Garden for the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show
Beneath the Canopy is a garden exploring shade as sanctuary, a place shaped by resilience, generosity and gathering. Designed for the Achievable Gardens category at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2026, the project investigates how structure, planting and light can create a sense of calm with a compact footprint.
Design intent
The garden explores how shade can operate as both structure and sanctuary within a compact footprint. A semi-dome arbour anchors the composition, creating enclosure without heaviness. Layered planting softens the geometry of the paving while reinforcing a sense of calm and containment.
Circulation is modest and deliberate — encouraging pause rather than procession. The space prioritises atmosphere over ornament, demonstrating how small gardens can carry emotional weight without visual excess.
Project Constraints & design Response
Project Constraints
– 3 × 3m Achievable Gardens footprint
– Fixed construction timeline
– Budget-conscious material selection
– Transportable and modular components
– Public-facing accessibility considerations
Design Response
The layout prioritises spatial efficiency and build clarity. Materials were selected for availability and ease of assembly, with detailing simplified to suit show conditions. Planting balances softness with structural intent, ensuring impact within limited scale.
Planting palette
The planting palette is designed to feel generous within a modest 4 × 5 metre footprint. Light filters through a deciduous canopy, casting movement and shadow across layered understorey planting. Soft greens and silvered foliage create calm continuity, while deliberate pops of purple foliage sit deeper in the composition, adding richness and visual depth without overwhelming the space. Texture does the work here — softening edges, catching light, and allowing the garden to feel both enclosed and open throughout the seasons.
Canopy
The canopy establishes enclosure and seasonal character while maintaining lightness.

material strategy
Materials were selected for simplicity, transportability and ease of assembly within a show build timeframe.
Redcor edging, modular paving and a lightweight semi-dome arbour create structure while allowing planting to remain the focus.
